Afghanistan: No confirmation for increase in UK troops

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has welcomed the President’s decision to increase military presence in Afghanistan but hasn’t revealed whether the UK will follow suit.

Reports have claimed that a senior defence source has said that Fallon is considering a rethink of how the UK’s military resources are deployed in the country, but is not yet contemplating an increase in troop numbers.

The source is also quoted as saying that, despite President Donald Trump’s encouragement for NATO countries to follow his lead, the UK has not received any request by the US to do so.

In January, the UK announced a 10 per cent increase in military advisers to help train Afghan forces.
