MoD spending on consultants up £68 million
DB News: 04/01/2016 - 11:13
Figures show that spending increased by nearly 300 per cent from from £23.5 million in 2010-11 to £91.2 million in 2014-15.
The increase in consultancy services comes as the total size of the armed forces is set to be reduced by 30,000, with the size of the MoD civil service set to be reduced by 30 per cent by 2020, which has drawn criticism from Shadow Defence Secretary Maria Eagle.
Eagle said: “This is yet another example of the government’s skewed priorities and the mess they have created at the Ministry of Defence. The thousands of servicemen and women who have been made redundant by the government will rightly be angry that, at the same time, defence ministers have hiked up spending on consultants by almost 300 per cent.
“Further government reductions to the size of the Ministry of Defence civil service up to 2020 will only make it harder for ministers to reduce consultancy spending over the next five years. These latest figures will do little to inspire confidence that the government have got a grip on expenditure in the department.”
