UK beats Ukrainian Armed Forces training target

The UK has achieved its target of training 2,000 members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) by the end of 2016.

The target was set by Defence Secretary Michael Fallon last summer during a visit to Kyiv, however, the Ministry of Defence has announced it now expects to surpass the figure by around 300 personnel.

Commenting on the achievement, Fallon said: “This underlines the UK’s commitment to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine and our other Eastern European partners. It sends another clear message that we stand firm with Ukraine in the face of aggression.”

The UAF training currently involves recognition of mines and IEDs, defensive operations in an urban environment, medical care, logistics and operational planning. So far, 16 UK teams have been deployed at 10 sites, including Desna, Zhytomyr and Lviv.

The training is due to continue for another 12 months.
