Basic pay for British Armed Forces will be increased by one per cent from the next month, after the move was recommended by the Armed Forces Pay Review Body.
Among other changes, there will also be a 17 per cent increase in core meal prices and a one per cent increase in other allowances. However, a report by the independent Armed Forces Pay Review Body has suggested dissatisfaction over the rise.
The report said: "On our visits, there was more dissatisfaction expressed over pay levels and the one per cent increase than previously. Almost every group we spoke with considered the increase to be unreasonable when compared with inflation and the increases in accommodation and food charges. Personnel made the case that one per cent was a real-terms pay cut and that it was unfair."
Meanwhile, an MoD spokesperson said: "We fully recognise the importance of our Armed Forces and their pay is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains fair. The government has accepted the independent Armed Forces’ Pay Review Body’s proposal for a one per cent increase."
