Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has said there is a real opportunity to build positive relations between the UK, the Falkland Islands and its South American neighbours.
Fallon made the statement on a visit to the Falklands, the first of its kind in over a decade, where the defence secretary spent time with islanders and Ministry of Defence (MOD) personnel. Fallon also examined the construction work taking place on the Island as part of the 10-year commitment to modernise the defensive infrastructure.
Currently, there are an estimated 1,200 military and civilian personnel based in the Falklands supporting defensive air, naval and land assets, including RAF Typhoon aircraft, helicopters, Royal Navy patrol vessels and an Army infantry company.
The construction work is part of a £180 million refurbishment package, which includes £60 million to improve the power station Mount Pleasant Camp, £22 million to improve facilities at the berths in Mare Harbour, and £20 million of work on accommodation at Radar Heads.
Fallon said: “This was an important opportunity to hear about life on the islands and the potential for economic development that will bring more jobs and prosperity.
“The right of the islanders to determine their own future was settled over 30 years ago and confirmed by the recent referendum.
“Now we want to build a better relationship with the new Argentinian government, as neighbours in the South Atlantic and fellow G20 members.”
