RAF fighter aircraft fleet to reach all time low

87 Tornados and 53 tranche 1 Typhoons are set to be retired by the end of the decade, which will bring the number of front line combat jets down to only 127.
New F-35 stealth fighters are due to arrive, but according to current predictions only 15-20 will be in use before 2020. This will leave the RAF with its smallest fleet since its creation in 1918.
Gen Sir Nick Houghton, the Chief of the Defence Staff, spoke in London last week and warned that that the RAF is stretched thin and at “the very limits of fast jet availability and capacity”.
