RAF Gibraltar receives £8m runway resurfacing

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has announced the completion of a £7.9 million runway resurfacing programme at RAF Gibraltar.

The station manages both military and civilian flights on a 6000 ft runway, a third of which is situated above the sea. The DIO awarded the contract for the project to fund the replacement of around 15,000 tonnes of asphalt and 200 airfield lights to Lagan Construction in May.

The refurbishment took place mostly at night to minimise the disruption of services at the station and was completed within four months. It is estimated that the life of runway has been extended for a further 20 years.

David Graham, DIO’s deputy head of Programme and Projects Delivery International, said: “Investing in infrastructure to enable military capability is a huge part of what the DIO delivers for defence so I’m really pleased with how quickly and smoothly this project has progressed. This was only possible because of how closely the DIO, Lagan Construction, RAF Gibraltar and the government of Gibraltar worked together to mitigate any possible problems.
