The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has begun work on constructing a new single living accommodation at Duke of Gloucester Barracks in South Carney, in preparation for the arrival of two army squadrons returning from Germany.
The project will provide 90 new bedrooms at the barracks for Junior Ranks and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers. The construction is being carried out by Lendlease on behalf of the DIO and is due to be completed in July.
The squadrons are currently based at Gutersloh and Bielefeld in Germany respectively, following their arrival to the Barracks, around 118 additional personnel will be used at South Carney by 2019.
Further development is also expected to take place, including the building of a new gym, refurbishment of existing sport facilities and the reconfiguration of offices and storage space.
Mark Duddy, Defence Infrastructure Organisation Army Basing programme director, said: “These developments will provide our service personnel with modern fit for purpose accommodation and facilities and are one example of how we’re investing in infrastructure across the UK. I hope the squadrons enjoy their new home.”
